How to Live Safely with Urban Coyotes - 2025 Update

Santa Monica residents have reported an increase in coyote sightings in recent weeks, particularly north of Montana Avenue. Experts believe this increase is linked to the Palisades Fire, which devastated large areas of the Santa Monica Mountains and displaced numerous wildlife species, including coyotes. As a result, these animals have ventured deeper into urban neighborhoods in search of food and shelter.
Coyotes are naturally wary of humans, but as they adapt to urban environments, it becomes increasingly important for communities to understand their behavior and take proactive steps to prevent conflicts.
Understanding Coyote Behavior
Coyotes are highly adaptable and opportunistic animals. While they are generally nocturnal, they may be seen during the day—especially when displaced or during denning season (February through June), when they are actively protecting and feeding their young.
Although they typically avoid humans, coyotes may become more bold or visible when they:
- Lose access to natural habitat or food due to events like wildfires
- Find easy access to food in neighborhoods (trash, pet food, rodents, etc.)
- Are unintentionally habituated by human behavior (feeding them)
Safety Tips for Coexisting with Coyotes
You can reduce the likelihood of coyote conflicts by following these simple guidelines:
Do:
- Secure all garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids.
- Bring pet food indoors—don’t leave it outside, especially overnight.
- Keep pets inside from dusk until dawn. If outside, supervise them closely, especially small pets.
- Trim overgrown landscaping that can provide hiding spots for coyotes.
Don’t:
- Never feed coyotes. It is dangerous—it causes them to lose their natural fear of humans.
- Don’t ignore them. If you see one, haze it (details below) to reinforce boundaries.
What to Do If You Encounter a Coyote
If you come across a coyote in your neighborhood or while walking:
- Stay calm and never run.
- Make yourself look larger—raise your arms, stand tall.
- Make loud noises—yell, clap, use a whistle or shake a can of coins.
- Maintain eye contact and slowly back away.
- Report aggressive behavior or sightings in high-traffic areas to Santa Monica Animal Control at (310) 458-8595.
